2003 Spring Simulation Interoperability Workshop Sponsored by the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization Held in conjunction with The Society for Modeling and Simulation International 2003 Advanced Simulation Technologies Conference The Hyatt Orlando Hotel Kissimmee, FL 30 March - 4 April 2003 The advance registration deadline for the 2003 Spring SIW is this Monday, 24 March. Reduced rates apply for those registering by this date. Those registering for the SIW will also be able to attend sessions of the SCS Advanced Simulation Technologies Conference (ASTC 2003) at no additional charge. You are encouraged to make workshop reservations on-line via the SISO web site at The same page has a hotel registration form that you can fax directly to the hotel. Below are a few highlights of the Workshop program. Please see the web site for additional information. A complete day-by-day agenda will be posted soon. 2003 SPRING SIW FOCUS: Modeling and Simulation in Support of Future Combat Systems PLENARY SPEAKERS COL William R. Johnson, USA Program Manager, Future Combat Systems Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency Kent Pickett Director, Simulation Support Office PM Future Combat Systems Andrew L. Vallerand, Ph.D. Head, Canadian Department of National Defence Synthetic Environment Coordination Office (DND SECO) Dr. Ralph Chatham, Ph.D. Program Manager for Training Superiority, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency SISO NEW INITIATIVE AREA: MEDICAL SIMULATION Medical simulation systems have unique technical, operational, and regulatory requirements, and serve a broad array of users and customers. Medical simulation increasingly needs interoperability standards that build upon already extensive medical interface standards for application in areas such as * operational systems for robot assisted surgery * command & control systems for medical situational awareness * medical models of varying resolutions for research and development * training systems for instruction and rehearsal * imaging systems for treatment planning and assessment * logistic planning systems for security and disaster response SISO will hold panel sessions and other discussions regarding the establishment of a continuing track in this important area. TUTORIALS (1) HLA Implementation Part I. Insights into Federation Development Issues (Jake Borah, AEgis Technologies) Part II. IEEE 1516: The Future of HLA (Bob Lutz, JHU/APL; Reed Little, CMU/SEI (2) Simulation of US and International Command, Control, Communication, Computing, and Intelligence Systems (C4I) (Frank Carr, The MITRE Corp) (3) Range System Interoperability using TENA and the IKE 2 Middleware (Ed Powell, SAIC) PROGRAM BRIEFINGS A full-day agenda of US and international program briefings is scheduled for Wednesday. Watch for the complete agenda on the SISO web site. SPECIAL PANEL DISCUSSION On Monday morning, a distinguished panel of experts from government, industry, and academia will discuss ``Priorities for M&S Standards`` This joint SCS-SISO session is the first in a new series of ``M&S Standards`` focused panel discussions to be held at multiple simulation events (e.g. SISO, SCS, ITEC, I/ITSEC). Each session will last approximately two hours and will have a standard format involving panel discussions addressing mid-term modeling and simulation standards needs. The panel discussions will be followed by audience discussion and feedback. Results from each of the sessions will be compiled and briefed back to the Simulation Interoperability Standards Organization (SISO) to advocate modeling and simulation community priorities to leadership in government, industry and academia.
