Network Modeling Demonstrations (Monday 1900-2100, after reception)

This special session will highlight network modeling efforts being
performed locally. SPAWAR and MIT will provide a demonstration of
the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) Wideband Networking Waveform
(WNW) model developed in OPNET. The Cooperative Association for
Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA) team from the San Diego Supercomputer
Center (SDSC) will demonstrate techniques for determining and
visualizing the topology of the Internet, and will discuss
applications including preventing cyber terrorism and predicting
impact of natural disasters.

In addition, the PEO C4I Carrier and Air C4I Integration program
office (PMW 750) will provide a presentation and demonstration of
their live and constructive simulation effort to examine bandwidth
demands of future aircraft carriers in the 2024 timeframe, when UAVs
will be operating from carriers (as well as from shore) and adding to
the growing ISR data load.

2009 Spring SIW Focus:
Network Modeling and Network Simulation Interoperability

Networks are a more critical component of our enterprises than ever
before and yet we often guess at how they will perform in the
enterprise. Add in the complexities of ad hoc networks and mobile
devices, and prediction of overall enterprise performance becomes
even less concrete. Even when we have good models of our networks,
when we integrate enterprises, they come with their own network
models that are often non-interoperable. This workshop will focus on
advances in modeling rapidly changing networks to support distributed
enterprises, and interoperability of network models.

Tutorial: HLA Evolved - Improvements and Benefits

The High Level Architecture (HLA) is the leading, open international
standard that enables efficient interoperability between simulation
systems for training and analysis. The SISO HLA Evolved Product
Development Group has completed a new revision of the standard,
code-named HLA Evolved, which has now gone to IEEE balloting.

This tutorial provides an overview of the major enhancements, along
with a discussion of how this latest HLA release improves the way
that M&S practitioners can develop, deploy and reuse simulations and
their components. Examples of HLA enhancements include modular FOMs
and SOMs, Web-Services support, Fault Tolerance, extended reuse of
new and old systems from different domains and improved
link-compatibility.

Tutorial: Distributed Observer Network (DON)

Kevin T. Mabie, Valador, Inc.

The technologies behind best-selling video games like Half-Life 2 and
Unreal Tournament are also being leveraged to allow for visualization
of simulations across many, varied subject areas. Video game engines
can allow for easily prototyped, full-featured, cost-effective
visualization projects. Herndon, Virginia based company Valador Inc.
is at the forefront of this emerging industry and has produced
visualization products for customers such as NASA's Exploration
Systems Mission Directorate and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency
(DTRA). We will explain what it takes to fully utilize video game
engines for simulation and visualization based products. Subjects
include when it's feasible and cost-effective to use game engine
technology, what video game engines are available and their pros and
cons, what kinds of developer resources and environment architecture
are needed to do the work and the pipeline for going from a
commercial game engine to a professional simulation product.

Tutorial: Test and Training Enabling Architecture (TENA)

The TENA Software Development Activity (SDA) is chartered to
enable interoperability among DoD training ranges, facilities, and
simulations and to foster reuse of range assets. To achieve this
vision, the TENA SDA has developed and validated a common
architecture called the Test and Training Enabling Architecture
(TENA). The TENA software includes the TENA Middleware, a
high-performance, real-time, low-latency communication infrastructure
used by training range instrumentation software and tools during
execution of a range training event. The standard TENA Object Model
provides data definitions for common range entities and thus enables
semantic interoperability among training range applications. The TENA
tools, utilities, and gateways assist in creating and managing an
integration of range resources. This tutorial gives an overview of
the TENA architecture, a discussion of the new TENA R6 middleware,
and an short overview of how TENA is being used in Joint testing and
training events.

Tutorial: Military Scenario Definition Language (MSDL)

This tutorial will discuss the elements within the MSDL specification
and the rules associated with populating the structures. It will
cover ongoing MSDL activities, including use within the simulation
and C2 community, MSDL tool development and tool availability, and
SISO standardization activities within the MSDL and C-BML Product
Development Groups.
